Name That Street,” GothamGazette.com, Issue of the Week, May 28, 2007.

Whether honoring celebrities or obscurities, street namings are generally quiet affairs with the City Council essentially rubber stamping the recommendations of the community boards. But the dispute over a four-block section of an avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn has renewed focus on the naming and renaming of city streets.

New Bills: Rights in Restaurants, Banning Markers,” GothamGazette.com, City Government, May 21, 2007.

At each of the City Council's stated meetings, council members introduce bills. Most of them never become laws, but some do. As a regular feature, Gotham Gazette discusses some of the legislation proposed at each meeting.

Chronicles of Elections Foretold,” GothamGazette.com, Issue of the Week/Voting Topic Page, August 21, 2006.

The last time a long-time U.S. Senator was defeated in a Democratic primary, anywhere in the country, was back in 1974. This was also the last year that there was a switch in party majority for either the New York State Senate or the New York State Assembly. Unlike Connecticut, however, the State of New York almost surely will once again have a doubt-free fall.

Has the Music Scene Died in New York?GothamGazette.com, Arts Topic Page, December 17, 2004.

When Bob Dylan moved to New York to make it as a singer-songwriter, he was acknowledging something that he helped define – the city was where pioneering musicians had to be. But if Dylan were starting out today, would he stay in Minnesota?

So Long, CBGBs, Part 43: Las Vegas Nights,” The New York Observer, Daily Transom, November 9, 2006.

When last we caught up with CBGBs, Patti Smith was closing the party down in a fine fettle. The other day, Sydney Beveridge met up with CBGB's proprietor and pals to ask: No really, what's next for the old punksters?

Unraveling a Campus Enigma” (and “A look at Crumhenge and Stonehenge),” The Swarthmore College Phoenix, November 2002.

After my hard-hitting interviews, I realized that the origin and significance of Crumhenge is not common knowledge to the Swarthmore community. Even the Friends Historical Library had little information on these exceptional rocks. Armed with a pen, paper and my cell phone (in case I got lost), I headed down to the meadows for a little inspiration.

“Circumventing Democracy: The Flawed System for Filling Vacancies in New York State,” (pdf) Citizens Union, April 2007.

A new briefing report issued by Citizens Union Foundation, examines the way in which vacancies for elected office are filled and the prevalence of special election winners in the State Legislature. This study finds that 31% of New York State Legislators are first elected to office in special elections. The report proposes reforms to give voters a more meaningful role in filling vacant seats.

Trying on Murray Hill Girl, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood, June 9, 2007.

Sydney Beveridge chafes at the confines of a different space, that is, the imaginary space in which New York's different neighborhoods jostle for prestige and prosperity. Sydney recently moved to Murray Hill, and this Halloween she tries to own it with a unique choice of costume. You'll never think about Tasti-De-Lite the same way again.
